Scituate Monthly eNewsletter – Restarting Mid Sept 2017

Yes, the summer is almost over, it’s time to get back on track.  Yes, we needed to revise our enewsletter start date, things ( boating, the beach, the mountains, hiking, travel, the spit, skiing (huh) did we say skiing? ) just kept getting in the way.  Earning a living has a way of intruding into the free time hobby’s that we like to work on.  So with that said, we’ll be deploying via email our new revised Scituate Monthly newsletter now aptly named The Scituate Spark. We’ll crank it up mid Sept. Our list has blossomed to over 373 people who will reap the rewards. Read (discounts and other cool stuff).  So the reason for the new name, The Scituate Spark. We asked around at a couple local restaurants, the Spit everyone liked the name. We’re going with it.

You can also follow The Spark on Facebook. It’s setup as a page.  More to follow on the page, check it out.

Also we’ve closed the door on new folks joining until Dec 2017. Because you folks are the test pilots. We’ll see how we do over the next couple months. Then we’ll re-open for to the general public come Jan. For all those that have signed up through Aug. 2017 your status will remain as Free. Anyone new will not receive the remaining 2017 newsletters, only you will.   Enjoy!

The reasons for the enewsletter in case you missed them. I’ve always discussed bringing longer form articles to our readers. FB is only 30 seconds of time, then its over. Posts move on or get buried by new posts.  Many of these posts change in an instant. So with longer form you either produce similar to a blog,  or a webpage.

We like the enewsletter format. Unlike print media, which takes forever (really only a week or so) get the stories, write the ideas, proof them, typeset or prepress, historical, new or buy images, layout, insert, redesign, submit for approval, gain approval or not, double check layout. Then finally go to print. Hopefully printing goes smoothly, which usually never happens. Remember we said 1 week. Then cut, review, stack, review, tag, move to staging, band and ship. Add a day or 2 here.  So with  our enewsletter  when news happens we can jump right on it. Pull out the laptop and start writing. Discuss new discounts with local business. Everyone is happy.

Our enewsletter just like our (FB) group will always be a 2 way street. See something that you want to comment on? Please do. Input from the audience only strengthens our membership. And for the time being you are it.

So why an enewsletter you might ask again?  Here’s the rest of the back story.  We asked around town for comments on the idea of a local enewsletter since the beginning of last summer, we’ve discussed the merits, the pros & cons at backyard parties, block parties, at a band concert, a wedding, at the Spit, at multiple restaurants and really in-depth chair to chair discussions at Rocco’s and of course Riva. Our conclusion from most everyone was only positive. Especially when we mentioned the local area discounts. It seems everyone loves a good discount.

Plus they said to keep it short with only usable content, not a lot of fluff. Add some local color images. No heavy advertising. That’s exactly our thinking too. Yes there may be a few ads sprinkled in. Need to pay for the service platform of course and a little beer money. Any extra money (ha ha) will be donated at 25% to the Scituate Animal Shelter. We love animals too you know.

So what else are we thinking? Recently we’ve been posting on (fb) about shopping local.  We all shop local, right?

Well now might be the time for you to really Shop Local. Why? Some of our local merchants are joining Scituate Monthly to offer some sweet discounts only for our readers. On a monthly basis you’ll receive our enewsletter containing specific products, services or my favorite, pizza and coffee served up with an excellent discount. To collect you will only need to show up, make your purchase, flash your member card (coming soon) and claim your discount. More about the membership cards next month. Here are a few examples of local businesses that are on board, who we’re going to discuss in detail in our get local Spot Light. Many more are coming too.

CP’S Wood Fired Pizza

Lido Juice

Riva Restaurant

TAJ Salon

Rivershed

The Lucky Finn

The Silent Chef

MasterCraft

Galley

Dunkin Donuts

Pete’s Mediterranean ( unfortunately Pete is out for now).

and more…

Each month our enewsletter will arrive in your inbox, This is only from us to you.
Please, don’t tell your friends, did we say that? Yes, they can’t join. As our way of saying Thanks.  In 2018 we’ll reopen the doors to everyone else.  All of you folks will receive all months up to the fee time for free.  Remember your the test pilots. No one else can join for now.

Here’s more.
Some other items that we’re working on.  You know them by name, you may shop them occasionally but do you really know our businesses. We’ll deliver in- depth conversations, to shine a Spotlight on our local businesses and show what really makes them unique. These businesses will offer our members only discounts or services. The only way to get this information. Is here.

Our Fine Print.

Just so you know, We will not sell or share your email address. (Ever).

We look forward to be bringing you really interesting items from our residential and business community. Information that you will only find here as the test pilots.

Thanks for checking us out and don’t tell your friends, yes that’s right Don’t tell them. Or at least not until  late 2017.

Cheers

Scit Monthly Social Good Summit.

Its interesting to read how much (including me) we gripe on our fb group about a lot of social issues in our town. Yes, Scituate has issues. From taxes to construction, politics to road conditions, schools to business closings, drinking problems to parades. We have issues. But you know what, every town has issues. The key in my view is how we tackle these ongoing problems. Challenging these issues is what sets us apart. We start the process by open griping on line. We then offer interesting comments which get shaped by additional comments. Some good some not so much, but everyone is entitled to an opinion, right? Our comments are molded from one person to the next. Where we go next is how we challenge our issues.

Scituate has some amazingly talented people. People that live here now, recently graduated or have moved away but still long for our lighthouse and shoreline.
From Barista’s to Drs., road crews to restauranteurs, woodworkers to salespeople, teachers, pastors, merchants, Football moms to soccer dads. We need brainpower, your thoughts, ideas, your passion for our town.

Our town and towns like us across the land have issues we can not solve alone. We need to work together to share ideas, to brainstorm, to grow a thought from 1 person to the next.
Let us challenge the issues in constructive conversation, back and forth banter, new ideas. This is your chance to provide fresh thoughts, nothing negative please.

We’ll pick a topic and post it Tuesday AM. Tell us in a few sentences or a paragraph how we can challenge our town. Our residents need to change it for the better, we need to provide ideas to keep our town moving in the direction where we the people want to go, which may not be in lock step with the BOS view.

For the posts, Keep the comments positive, use the kiss rule. Let’s together solve some issues in our town and maybe even the world, or better yet the next town over.

My disclaimer.
I’m borrowing this idea from the MasterCard Social Good Summit to end world poverty.
Instead of the 30 second elevator pitch, you get to type your pitch comment out here.
Ps. If you would like to submit some social town topics, send me a pm Please.

#28 Thrill of the Grill

Back by popular demand. Here you go to the folks that have asked again that we post this up again.
So for all you garlic bread lovers out there.
Mix 1/2 cup shredded italian cheese blend, 2 Tblsp softened butter, 1 grated garlic clove, i love this, so I use 2. Comes out really strong. If this is your first time try 1 to start and adjust from there.
Add pinch of salt.
Half 1 loaf of french bread lenghtwise and place cut-side up on a sheet of foil. Spread the cheese mixture on top. Form a packet around the bread. Leave some room for the steam. Grill over medium heat for 10 minutes. Open carefully and crack open a couple of ocktoberfests from boston beer and enjoy again.
Cheers!

PS:  if you have a crowd double everything to use the other half of the bread.
When u do, invite me over Please!

Scituate Monthly is back 10-3-14

Hey everybody,  We’ve been away for a while again as you may have noticed. We’re apologizing again for the missed posts that you’ve all complained about. Some much more loudly than others. The personal messages (no names), the personal messages have been  mostly heartwarming to read, some of the messages are absolutely crazy to down right nasty. We’ve done a double take.

We understand the frustration, we really do. Rest assured that if we decide to take off time again to figure our next moves we’ll announce to our readers in advance. So the reason you might ask is why the time off. 2 reasons really. First, We wanted to determine if blogging was really what we wanted to do for Scituate. I mean we’re utilizing Facebook as the short form and thats working. Yes, we can’t do a deep dive into subjects but hey do we really have time for that on fb? My own attention span is about 10 seconds.

We come to realize that long form writing has a different style and timeframe, its the timeframe that we run into an issue. Life, kids, wife, mortgage, jobs did I say life, well you know what I mean. There are a million things that get in the way. But the bottom line is we think talking about stuff in Scituate is deeply important to all of us.

We’ve come to determine that we’re in. Totally in for the long haul. Instead of posting everyday we’re starting out to 3 times per week. It’s still a large investment in time. We’re going to be looking for guest bloggers to help out. Making time is the issue and we think that we have that covered.

We will be coming back strong. Scituate Monthly Strong.

The second reason is we wanted to determine if the need was out there for Scituate. What was decided is that we will refocus our ideas back onto our town. We were getting lost blogging earlier. When we started we were going in 100 different directions. We are now going to focus on our town and the events and ideas wrapped around our town.

The following list are the areas that we’re going to re-focus on here.

Our town, restaurants, grilling, beers, yes I said beers. If u know me – you know I like beer, weekend adventures, local road trips, events, local businesses, charities and some other fun stuff thrown in to keep u on your toes. We will be bringing you a few contests, we tried on Facebook with some decent success. We’ll be trying them here too.  In addition,  We tried an on-line calendar of events. That didnt pan out as it was hard to set up with iphones. We’re going to attempt that again in the coming months.

Some Up and coming news. We’re adding a enewsletter attached to a, wait for it,- wait for it. A new spanking Website.
(insert applause here). We’ve been harassed err I mean asked that is, to add the newsletter and the website many many times. So now we’re working on it. Both will bring more in depth coverage for our readers. Many folks have relayed messages that now might be the right time for it.

Our enewsletter will focus on 4 areas.

1. A Business Spotlight- which will focus on 1 business per month. Full article around this particular business, the business will be offering some sort of special or discount only to our readers. There will be links back to the website, contact info etc. for each business.

2. Local pictures highlighting our town.

3. Points of interest events that are upcoming and ongoing in town.

4. Sponsors- yes we need sponsors.

We really believe that now is the time to start these projects. We strongly believe in privacy and will not resell your email address or any info shared with us.

Questions or comments please let us know in our comments section below.

We look forward to being back!
